My 18th birthday

I turned 18 on November 26th. I had a lovely day and my boyfriend came to me a day before. My best friend and her parents also came over. I got some wonderful presents I'd like to show :

A set of 5 enamel bowls. I love these, and the biggest one is very suitable for washing stockings as is described in a 1941 libelle magazine (I'll write a post about that later !)

A few libelle magazines from 1941. These contain so much useful tips and the most beautiful fashion images

Hints on taking care of your iron and other home appliances

A 1935 Frohne Schnittzeichner pattern book. Unfortunately, the patterns are too difficult for me but one day I'll be able to use the patterns, I'm sure I will ! The book itself is great for inspiration though !

My boyfriend gifted me a 1930s/1940s rucksack. I couldn't take a decent picture of it, so I'll show it later.

Busy days, and some ideas and a birthday.

Here in Holland -well, near Holland because I live in Germany- we celebrate 'Sinterklaas' on December 5th. Maybe you even know what is is. If you'd like more information, take a look at this website. For me, it means buying gifts and writing poems and that can be really hard. I am awful at writing poems. I really am. Other things that keep me busy is sewing. At the moment I am sewing a blue bouse, inspired from a 1944 pattern which a friend gave me almost a year ago. I have to draw every sewing pattern myself, my teachter told me. To practise the drawing. This is the very first blouse I made which features buttonholes and a collar. So far, I really like it. Sometimes sewing can be tricky but I want to become really good at it and make my job out of it when I'm a bit older.

the blouse I'm making looks like the one on the right, but mine has a different collar.

In 5 days I'll turn 18 and I cannot wait. That's also becaue my boyfriend will come to visit me, he'll stay for more than a week and will celebrate Sinterklaas with us. Then, we'll go over to his house and also celebrate it with his family. I miss him so terribly much ! I have not seen him since October 31st.. But in 4 days we will see eacht other again ! How do you cope with missing your boyfriend/husband for several days/weeks?

Today I stumbled upon this image on Glamourdaze :

Isn't that dress just darling ? I love the bodice and the skirt and the sleeves ! I am thinking about drawing a pattern for this dress. I have made a blouse and a skirt before, but never attached a skirt to a bodice and i have no idea about closures and where to place them... A zipper ? Snap fasteners ? Side seam ? Or in the back ? Perhaps it would be a good idea to look at original dresses from the 1940s and look at how they are constructed. I already have a dress in mind for that.

Now I must write another poem and I also have to finish my homework !

My very first 'big' knitting project !

I've knitted alot of things already. Small and simple things, like a scarf, but never anyting 'big'. Well, that is going to change ! I decided that I needed a 1940s cardigan. Usually my mother knits for me but this time I'd like to try it myself. Finding the right pattern was not easy. At all. It had to be a rather simple pattern because I am a beginner and I greatly prefer thick needles and thick yarn. After searching for a long time, I found a pattern for the 'Date-maker cardigan', from 1946. This cardigan is also worn by Rachel Mcadams in the movie 'The Notebook' (One of my favourites !). As I started knitting, I felt a bit nervous because this is my very first big project. But the pattern is really easy and I like it so much and cannot wait to see the finished product !

Soon I can start shaping the armholes !

Do you like knitting ?

I'm back ! (And joining the knit for victory knit-along)

Hello dear readers,

I've not written a post since July, that's almost 4 months ! I do not know why I have not posted for so long. I had nothing to write about and I have been busy with school and other things. But know I am back and will blog more often.

I have a question towards my German readers : shall I continue to translate each post ? Writing German is getting really difficult for me and it would be much easier for me to just write in English.

And another question : what would you like to see on this blog ? Any suggestions ? I'd love to know !

Have you joined the 'Knit for victory knit-along' yet ? I have, and in the next post I'll show you my knitting project :)

Summer fashion inspiration from the 1930s and 1940s

- Sommerkleidung-Inspirationen aus den 30er und 40er Jahren-

Summer (finally) arrived here. And it is so inredibly hot outside ! I often spend most hours of the day inside the house, for it is unbearable outside. When I do so, I often look for summer fashion inspiration from the 1930s and 1940s. And I'd like to share that with you all.

Long time no post

- Seit längerer Zeit keine Posts -

Hello you all ! I want to apologize for not writing on my blog for over two months. I was busy with all kinds of stuff and just couldn't find the time or energy to write. Some things in my life have changed since my last post. I now visit another school and ... I have a boyfriend !

Hallo an euch allen !

Readers/Followers might know that I'd like to become a costume designer one day, or at least want to do something with sewing as a career. I figured that the school I was visiting just wasn't the thing for me. Together with my mother we looked up other schools near me and we found the perfect one ! My teacher is a professional seamstress and dressmaker and she is so very good at sewing. I now got to school twice a week (and on the same days I follow driving lessons in the evening), which gives me an enormous amount of spare time to sew and to do other things.

As I mentioned previously in this post, I have a boyfriend ! His name is Sjoerd, he is 19 years old and he is so sweet. We have a mutual hobby : re-enactment (WWII) and I miss him everyday because he lives almost three hours away from me. We met through a friend of mine. I was going to paticipate in a photoshoot. The theme would be : 'Soldiers saying goodbye to their girlfriends/wifes'. But the problem was, that I did not have a soldier to pose with. After asking and searching a friend of mine send me his Facebook profile and he and I started talking. After a few weeks or so, we decided to go to Amsterdam together. We had a great day. We visited each other rather often and went to re-enactment events together, not knowing we were totally in love with each other. And then one day, he asked me if I wanted to be his girflriend. And ofcourse, with no doubt, I immediately said 'yes' ! I have never felt so happy in my whole life. Having a boyfriend makes one feel so mature, so happy ! When he's not here I miss him terribly. But it is definately worth seeing him again.

I hope that I will find some interesting things to blog about in the future. Do you have any suggestions ? Please, let me know !

with love,

Jip.

Some weeks ago I was interviewed for China television together with my friend Mark Davids and today it was broadcasted. It can be watched here :  http://www.cncworld.tv/news/v_show/31900_Living_in_the_thirties.shtml

I want to apologize for the fact that I do not blog much at the moment. That is because I recently switched school and I have been sick for a while. I look forward to blog more in weeks to come.

The scarf.

 -Der Schal-

A few days ago, the scarf arrived at Tomáš' house. He let me know that he was rather satisfied with it, which made me really happy. He also made photos of himself wearing the scarf, wich I'll show you now.

Doesn't the scarf look great on him ? I think it fits him and his uniform very well :). Knitting for someone else is much more fun than knitting for yourself and I must admit that I cannot wait until I can knit something for him again.

with love,

Jip.

Assignment 2 : My favourite colours.

For this assignment, we had to answer the following questions :

-  What is your favourite colour ?
- My favourite colour is brown.
- Did your favourite colour change over the years ?
- Yes, it has. When I was very young I liked pink, when I was a little older I loved black and now brown is my favourite colour.
- Why do you like this colour so much ?
- I do not know. I guess I like it because it is a very classic, oldfashioned colour.
- Which feeling does this colour give you ?
- This colour gives me a feel of cozyness, although i do not know why that is.

We also had to include a picture of ourselves when we were younger, and make up a little story to go along with it. And we must post a picture of an outfit that has our favourite colour in it.

I can still remember the day this picture was taken, in school. My mother got me all dressed up for the picture and I did like the outfit.  The room was decorated with old washboards and other old things. I already liked them when I was very young, which is funny because I still like them.

This is a photo of a red dress which I like very much. It is from Etsy. I chose this because I think it is a beautiful, yet very simple and elegant 1940s dress. There is no brand or label name given and the price is $ 89 (67,39 Euros.).

Jip.

My soldier : Thomas Hackett

After publishing my latest post, I thought that it would be a good idea to tell you all a bit more about my soldier, so you know who I am actually writing about.

Here is a picture of him and two other members from his association, about which I will tell you more later in this post.

American uniform.

 And British uniform.

 Isn't he handsome ? ;)
Sieht er nicht hübsch aus ? ;)

And here are some action photos :
Hier sind einige 'Action-Bilder'

Thomas Hackett is his reenactment name, his real name is Tomáš Hataj . He is 17 years old and lives in Czech Republic, where he is also member of the Living History group called 'KVH Tommy & Yankee Association Pilsen'. He met the group and the Reenactment World during one of the Liberation Festivals, which is held every year in Pilsen. His rank within the club is Cpl. (corporal).

Besides Living History he also really likes the fashions, music, cars, and hairstyles of the 1940s and 1950s.
From the 1940s his favourite musicians are : Glen Miller, Vera Lynn and Jaroslav Ježek. And from the 1950s they are : Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and Frank Sinatra. I think that is an amazing music taste for a seventeen-year-old :).

A scarf for my Soldier

-Einen Schal für meinen Soldat-

The title of this post probably needs a bit of exlplaination, So I will start right away.
A month ago, I suddenly got a message from a nice young man on Facebook. His name is Tomáš
and made he made a compliment about a picture of me that he saw. We started to talk and soon we discovered that we had very much in common. Our interests, favourite music, etc. He is a WWII Reenactor and now we write each other letters the same way people did during the war, with special 'Victory Mail or V-Mail' :

During the war it was common for the women home to knit garments for the soldiers  who were abroad. And so I decided to knit a scarf for him. And because of that, and because of the fact that he is a WWII reenactor, I call him 'my' soldier ;).

I must say that I am rather satisfied with the finished product. It is actually my very first knitting project. Soon I'll sent it zo the Czech Republic so he can wear it. I am really happy we 'met' each other because he is a very nice person and a great friend.

Es is mein erstes 'Strick-Projekt'.

with love,

Jip.

Photoshoot with Yesim Yilanci

After a rather long time (more than a month) I can finally catch up on some blogging. School kept me busy ver much and the last few weeks I had several events with Club Interbellum. One day, a girl from the photography-section of my shool asked me if I wanted to do a photoshoot with her. I thought it would be great fun and said yes.

The dress I was wearing is an original 1940s evening dress. I did my hair by curling it with sponge rollers and then I did victor rolls afterwards. Here are the photos that Yesim made :
